Dec. 1—San Antonio firefighters responded to a massive 2-alarm fire at a Denny's restaurant along I-10 on the city's East Side on Thursday, December 1. San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood said the building was destroyed by the large flames.

Hood said they received a call about a kitchen fire around 5:15 a.m. at the restaurant attached to the Flying J in the 1800 block of North Foster Road, near I-10. He said the firefighters tried to put out the fire, however, the flames quickly spread throughout the building, Hood said the fire was likely fueled by the wind and grease in the kitchen.

According to SAFD, customers and employees inside the building were able to make it out safely. About 50-60 big rigs were in the parking lot at the time of the fire. They were in the process of moving out of the lot this morning.

The entire building has been destroyed and firefighters are letting the fire burn out through the metal roof, Hood said. SAFD said it will be in the area for a while.

Judson Independent School District wrote in a Facebook post at about 8 a.m. that the fire was near Wagner High School, writing how the campuses are in the process of closing ducts to make sure smoke does not enter the buildings.

The district also noted the fire has caused several traffic lights to malfunction on Foster Road, which may affect bus routes to area schools.
